WHAT YOU CAN DO

On this page we are trying to make some suggestions for what you could consider doing in order to start loving your neighbour. Over time we may gather so many ideas from you that we will catalogue them in a better way. For the moment we are identifying simple things you can do or for the more adventurous there is more. So enjoy going out and trying to love your neighbour - let us know how you get on!

Simple Things

  • Be more positive with people in general (on the street, in your car etc.)
  • Call on your neighbour for a chat (or even to introduce yourself)
  • Go for a coffee with a work colleague whom people don’t normally associate with
  • Be more willing to assist other people
  • Call on some elderly person in your neighbourhood and blame this website for inspiring you to check on them!
  • Learn how to say hello / good morning, etc., in your neighbour's mother tongue.
  • Put their wheely bins back on their drive whilst they are out at work.
  • Cut both your grass and theirs at the same time (especially shared front gardens).  Add the common verge into the equation.
  • Find out from nursing homes to see if you could come and visit the elderly residents
  • Volunteer for meals on wheels in your area

More Adventurous Things

  • Invite a neighbour in for a tea or coffee
  • Plan a night out with work colleagues
  • Invite a neighbour or work colleague to go to a church, sport, club etc. where you normally go
  • Invite a group of neighbours around to plan together how you might improve your neighbourhood
  • If you have young children and don’t share a school run – consider starting one
  • Plan a father and son, mother and daughter, etc., day in your neighbourhood
  • With Christmas in mind - distribute Samaritans Purse (www.samaritanspurse.ie ) leaflets on preparing a shoebox to your local street; invite people to prepare one and drop it in to your house on a particular day and enjoy a mulled wine with mince pies. For each box, a person’s name is put in a draw and the winner gets a home-made Christmas cake.
  • Ask neighbours in to watch the rugby this weekend.
  • Organise a bouncy castle and BBQ for a group of neighbours (very cost efficient) and stage them in your front garden (avoids insurance type issues)
  • Join the residents association.
  • Investigate a “barter” system for the neighbourhood (e.g., what skills and trades can be utilised by each member of the community).
  • Get the kids toys out into the shared play area in your neighbourhood and get them used by everyone.
  • If you are interested in a sport, consider volunteering with the local club.
  • Get involved with the local scouts!
  • Try having an open house at Christmas and invite the neighbours
  • Get involved in the national coffee morning for the Irish Hospice or Ice Cream day for the Down Syndrome association of Ireland
  • Get in contact with your local councillors or TDs on anything that could help your local area – e.g., litter or graffiti, lack of playgrounds, job creation – and thank them now and then!
  • Organise barbeque in the community / estate during summer months
